A lot of people think having a garden is so much work and starting a garden is even worse and so expensive! Ok, all of you are right, if you don´t have a proper network. Today I want to bring you some ideas how to grow your own seed network and spend less money on your garden.
- Talk about your garden or your plans to start a garden
You won´t believe how many people know other people who already have a garden. Another awesome thing, a lot of people would like to have a garden but are afraid to start one on their own. These people are perfect for you, as they can help you with your garden and then get the hang of it and start their own garden a bit later. That’s the time where you can help them out with work and seeds and give something back.
- Ask friends and family
Don´t just think in your own network, start to use the already existing network of your own network too. For example a friend of mine ask her grandmother. Perfect!
- The world wide web
It is unbelievable how many organizations are out there to plant gardens. Just tip in “seed donation”. There we go
http://www.seedsavers.org/apply-for-free-seeds for the USA
http://www.freiessaatgut.de/worum-gehts/ for Germany
- Search for a seed box in your neighborhood or start your own
If you found one great. If not start your own like me “Saatgut-FAIR-Teiler”.
- Garden communities
If you have a garden community in your surrounding you can go there and ask. It´s pretty easy I did it too =). If I can do it, you certainly can!
- Go to craigslist or ebay classified
Some people are cool enough to offer their seeds online. The one thing you need to pay are the shipping costs.
- Friends who give you vegetables
You may have friends or family that give you a cucumber, zucchini or pumpkins. Here you go, your first free seeds sample. Make sure they are pure, if not, you will grow a F1 generation and they won´t bring you a harvest. Still they are a nice training experience and are great fertilizers =).
- The party 1.0
You are invited to a party and you see physalis (my favorite example) just take one and plant your own (link here)
- The party 2.0
Create your own seed swapping party. Have a nice evening with your friends, prepare some food and put on the invite “Please bring as many seeds as possible from your garden, your friends garden or your parents garden. We gone swap the seeds so you get new seeds too.”
Some doesn’t even want new seeds and are happy to give theirs away.
- Send mails to organizations
During my research for my own garden, I found a lot of organizations and initiatives. I just contacted them via mail and ask polity for a seed sample. Some are doing it, some don´t.
- Gene bank
Every country has a gene bank. These institutions are to keep and give away seeds. Go to the homepage find the catalog and order yourself 3-6 samples. It takes time, start 4-8 weeks before you want to start the new season.
You don´t just need a seed network for your first year of gardening. I can recommend you to keep it up all the time. You never know if you gone have plague or plant illnesses. Then you don´t have the possibility to produce your own seeds for the next year.
