- Talk about wanting a garden
Most people start to search for s spot first. It can be so much easier, if you just spread the words! I talked about wanting a garden for years. After I moved I actually started with a big balcony. I learned a lot: How many plants can my balcony take? How hot and killing the south side can be? How to make watering more efficient? And so much more.
With talking about your wishes, you will get to know more people with the same desires. Even better, you will find out who already has a garden or specific plants on their balcony. That is your first step in to the seed network.
- Look at spots and places or start as a helper
I for myself have my garden in a garden colony (aka German Schrebergarten), it´s a comment thing in Germany and throughout the last decade most of them had a lost in garden keepers. You can also start with your balcony or your window sill, you will be surprised how much you can already grow there.
Don´t settle for the first thing you see, keep yourself open and ask around, some of your friends my already know something you may not. Or you do it like me and settle in with someone who already got a garden and start as a helper.
- Get to know your place
Something very important! Don´t start planting like your existence depends on it, it doesn´t. Take your time and get to know the place. How is the movement of the sun? Where do you have shadow? Which places can you use for planting? Where to collect water? Do I need a pond? … Plants do have needs and the better you met them, the better your harvest will be.
The first thing I bored for my garden on ebay classifieds were 4 ordinary chairs. You can go to a second hand store too. Ask your friends if they have furniture to give away.
I spend hours just looking at my 520 qm and planning around in my head. It´s also essential to make some drawings, to keep in mind, what you already planned or to just realize that that plan was crappy.
- Ask around for plants and seeds and keep the seeds of your bought food
Of cause you can buy everything, but than your garden will get pretty expensive in a very short time. You can ask friends who already have a garden or garden neighbors. Go online to ebay classifies and search for plants that otherwise get thrown out. Another opportunity are shops, from groceries store till your hardware store, ask everyone if you can fetch the plants, before they throw them out. The only thing that can happen is that they gone say “no” (than you already attended a free session to rejection therapy).
The seeds collection works with your regular bought food. For example I went to a networking event and the food immediately caught my eye, there it was, my seed sample of physalis. I took some of them home and took out the seeds for my garden. It can be though that you have bad luck and get a F1 generation, which won´t produce fruits or seeds.
- Think ahead
Not only by planning where to plant what, you also should plan ahead what you gone do with all the food. Where to store it? How to store it? How to can it? Where to get the glasses from?
Try to use your network as best as possible. To buy should always be the last option and it´s the most expensive one.
