I love pumpkins. I didn´t use to like them, a lot of people that I know didn´t. The reason, yes, if you don´t know how to process or cook a pumpkin, it taste like crap.
You eat it and you decide to not like it! I´m luckily a person who gives everything a second chance and especially food! I always want to try it on my own, before really disliking something. My two favorite pumpkin cultivars are Butternut and Hokkaido.
How to plant pumpkins
I always start my pumpkins end of March. You just need to put some soil into a left over toilet paper role (have a look here).
Than you just wait and water the plants once in a while. After 3-4 weeks I start to put the plants out on the balcony over the day, so they can get used to the sun and weather. That way they easier adapt later, after planting them out into the garden.
How to reseed pumpkins
Every time I cook, bake or can pumpkins I spear the seeds. You just take out the inner part of the pumpkin with a spoon. Put that stuff on an old newspaper, isolate the seeds from leftover meat otherwise it will mold.
Spread the wet seeds all over the paper and put it next to the heating and let them dry for one week. The seeds will still have a tinny skin on them, this one you gone take off after a week. It´s like cleaning. You just take a seed between your thumb and pointing finder and pressor it a bit. If the seed is dried it will kind of jump out of the skin, so be careful not to have the seeds all over the place.
How to storage pumpkins
I storage my pumpkin in the cellar or my garden house. I have vegetable cases where I put them in, the cases are stackable, which saves a lot of place.
It should be to warm or wet in the room of storage. I kept my pumpkins till March the next year. They are great to store and don´t need much attention. Every once in a while I checked if there was any mold and they were fine.
When and where to put them out into garden
After the latest frost. In Germany it´s end of May I put the small plants into the garden. As I build a raised bed this year I put them on there, as they love soil with a lot of nutrition. You can also plant them on the compost.
Accidently planting pumpkins
That is pretty easy, if you just throw the rest of your pumpkin onto the compost the chances are pretty high you gone get a new or 20 new plants next year =). Here you need to be careful, if you bought a pumpkin and that one was a F1 generation. The new upcoming plants won´t give you any harvest.
So get some seeds from a friend for your first pumpkin adventure.
